Description and objective: This course is based on EMCT: Electromagnetic Compatibility Tutorial®, authored by Mr. King. The CD-ROM has been distributed and well received in over 30 countries (published by Elliott Laboratories and co-branded with The IEEE Standards Information Network). The journey starts by introducing common-mode EM field design processes through simplified block-diagrams, then progressing with increasingly high detail through circuit board layouts, topologies, regional partitioning, stack-ups, power and signal transmission lines, effects of transfer impedance and fields from circuit boards to chassis structures, and the implementation of ground nulls to develop reflection losses as the partitioning field transfers.
The course continues to examine various system-product based architectures including intra-systems effects, inspection of backplane and mid-plane systems architectures, and describes how to derive effective common-mode architecture from system-product electrical architecture. A highly detailed description for shielding processes is offered, including the effects of EM wave impedance onto shield structures ranging from solid sheets to perforated and screened arrays, waveguides operating in cutoff, shields as modules carried on circuit boards, and operations of cable shielding. In sum, this course spans across all significant high-speed and high-frequency design increments from what occurs when a single digital integrated circuit device is mounted on a circuit board, to the common-mode and related EMC architectures of complex systems, including systems susceptibility effects.
