Description and objective: Optoelectronics is a dramatically advancing subject, playing the central role in almost all forms of data and infomation exchange. This course gives an overview of the optoelectronics industry starting from the question "What is a waveguide?", and develops the topic up to the level required for a technical specialist. There is an emphasis towards the photonic components driving the Internet, such as Array Waveguide Gratings (AWG), Optical Cross Connects (OXC) and systems for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM). There will also be a session dedicated to the packaging of photonic devices. This is a course designed to give a valuable introduction to the key features of optoelectronic components that would be particularly relevant to optical telecommunications.
