Description and objective: The focus of the course will be to provide a practical overview of the art of video and audio compression in broadcast systems and insights into the practicalities of digital broadcasting. The theoretical and mathematical content is restricted to the essential and explanations of the signal processing will be mainly from a systems designer's point of view. Speakers are from BBC Training & Development, Independent Television Commission, BBC Digital Audio Broadcasting and Digital TV Group.
The first day will describe image compression techniques, their practical application and an overview of the video portion of the MPEG compression standard. Finally the background to the assessment of picture quality will be considered.
The objectives of the second day are to introduce the techniques used in audio data rate reduction systems used in Digital Radio and Digital Television. It will also present an overview of the Digital Audio Broadcast System. The day will end with an overview of developments in Digital Radio.
The third day is devoted to transmission for Digital Video Broadcasting and will highlight error control techniques and modulation schemes to ensure reliable reception of the MPEG data. It will include an overview of the multiplexing of transport streams; the EPG and scrambling.
